Real Change for Greenwich

Long summer holiday for Labour councillors

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 26th May 2009

Greenwich Labour councillors have voted themselves a 3 month long summer holiday despite opposition from the Liberal Democrats.

Lib Dem Leader Brian Woodcraft said:

"Regular council meetings are necessary to allow councillors to hold the council leadership to account and for residents to ask questions and present petitions.

"But Labour councillors have voted not to hold a council meeting between 29th July and 28th October. This means that for 3 months this summer, accountability in Greenwich is on holiday!"

"Labour councillors seem to think that the only purpose of council meetings is to rubber stamp decisions made elsewhere. They rarely ask questions or challenge the council's leadership.

"Liberal Democrat councillors will continue to hold Labour to account and make sure local residents' views are heard."
